A new study provides the first evidence that people use the same brain circuitry to figure out space, time and social distances. The results may help to determine whether we care enough to act: Is something happening here, now, to someone I love? Or over there, years from now, to a stranger?
This is interesting to compare to the way I’ve continued relationships with friends/family/colleagues in my last city compared to the place I live now. It’s also fascinating from a language point of view. If these common metaphors are hard-wired, how many other metaphors are physically, rather than culturally, developed?
