Musings on leadership

A leader’s real “authority” is a power you voluntarily give him, and you grant him this authority not with resentment or resignation but happily.

David Foster Wallace on leadership (via explore-blog)

A well timed quote – this was discussed as part of today’s training around leadership and running a small team.

On the first reading I thought it said ‘A real leader’s authority is a power you voluntarily give…’, which seems more true. Many leaders have authority through their status in an organisation, their knowledge, their connections and suchlike. These can all be effective leaders, but a leader who leads through conviction and the belief of their followers is capable of so ,much more.
